There are football kits. And then there are cultural artefacts. The 1991 Arsenal away shirt — the yellow and blue bruised banana — belongs firmly in the second category. Loud, audacious and entirely unmistakable, it was a shirt that captured a team playing with swagger at a moment when English football was finding its identity. Thirty-five years later, Arsenal have reimagined it for the 2026/27 season — and to mark the launch, the club has released Arsenal By Design, a short film that explores exactly why that shirt still matters.
The film is as much about London as it is about football. Ian Wright — who wore the original with the kind of personality it demanded — reflects on what the 1990s meant for the club and for the city, and what it felt like to represent a team with its own unmistakable sense of self. Alongside him, Leah Williamson, Chloe Kelly and Lotte Wubben-Moy bring the present-day Arsenal voice — connecting the thread between the boldness of that 1991 design and the identity that defines the club today.
The Bruised Banana is back. And it looks better than ever.
